Competing Craftsmen's Masterpieces from the Third Reign

Competing Craftsmen’s

The legendary competing master painters, Master Thongyu (Luang Wichit Chetsada) and Master Khong Pae (Luang Seni Borirak), have left their masterpieces on the western mural of Wat Suwannaram Formally called Wat Thong since the Ayutthaya Period, the temple was entirely renovated in the First Reign. The masterpieces of the two masters are thus in  good condition, considered a rare and notable heritage. Master Thongyu painted the story of Nemirat, and Master Khong Pae the Mahosot. Master Thongyu’s style was typically Thai, with elaborated details and lining accentuation in red, blue, and brown. Master Khong Pae, in contrast, painted troops of Thais, Chinese, and Westerners. In addition to the murals, the congregation hall is intriguing as well. The gable is a wonderful woodwork in the motif of god Narayana atop a garuda surrouded by angelic hosts.
